Bike route description

This gravel day bike tour is based in the beautiful and historic town of Girona (Catalonia) with 4 loop rides. Giving bike riders a chance to explore the area and improve their fitness and technique.

You will have the opportunity to discover one of the most untouched areas in Girona, cycling by the fields and farmhouses in the east of Girona, in the Llemana Valley. Visit the plain of Llagostera and its surrounding fields. Discover the Gavarres mountains visiting the Saint Miquel Castle and finish the tour with an endurance stage in the valley of Rocacorba and the lake of Banyoles.
Girona has been and remains the base for many pro bike riders and teams. The Pros come for the large quantity of high quality roads found in the area, the challenging gradient of many of the hills and a climate perfect for year round riding, all making the Girona region perfect for training camps for bike riders of all levels.

Arrival day

Welcome to Girona!
Once you arrive in Girona, you can head straight to your hotel to check-in. Once settled, take time to explore this charming city, rich in history and culture. Girona is renowned for its beautifully preserved Jewish Quarter, one of the finest in the world. Don’t miss the impressive Cathedral and a scenic walk along the medieval walls, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Should you need transfers or any assistance upon arrival, we’re here to help. If you’d like to acclimatize or simply enjoy more time in Girona, we’d be happy to arrange extra nights for your stay.

Option 1: Rocacorba & Banyoles

Your tour begins with a welcome meeting at our office, where we’ll go over the routes and key details. If you’re renting bikes with us, this will be followed by a bike fitting to ensure you’re all setup for your ride.

Distance: 61 km | Elevation gain: 830 m

You’ll start by riding to Sant Gregori before heading toward the Rocacorba climb, passing through the scenic Canet d’Adri area. The route takes you up to around 500 meters in elevation before descending to the lake in Banyoles—an ideal spot for a coffee or lunch break.
From there, you’ll return to Girona via the open plains north of the city, finishing the ride with a peaceful stretch along the River Ter.
Now it’s time to celebrate your adventure! Girona is home to a variety of cycling cafés and bars where you can unwind with a cold beer and enjoy some delicious local food.

We also have alternative shorter and easier alternatives available of this loop.

Option 2: Les Gavarres

Distance: 60 km | Elevation gain: 1065 m

This route takes you into the scenic Gavarres mountains. You’ll leave Girona through the peaceful Sant Daniel valley and begin the first major climb of the day to the Castle of Sant Miquel. After a gravel descent, the route continues with 25 km of rolling terrain.
Madremanya makes a great coffee stop before you take on the second major climb to Sant Mateu del Montnegre. From the top, it’s a rewarding descent followed by a flat final stretch that brings you back to Girona.

Option 3: Llagostera ride

Distance: 53 km | Elevation gain: 420 m

This is the route with the least amount of climbing—perfect for an easier day in the saddle. You’ll begin by following Girona’s Via Verda (Greenway) toward Llagostera. A short detour to the church is highly recommended for its panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
After passing Llagostera, you’ll leave the Greenway and head north toward Sant Andreu Salou. From there, the route continues through Quart before rejoining the Greenway for a smooth ride back into Girona.

A shorter 40 km variant of this route is also available.

Option 4: Mas Llunés

Distance: 49 km | Elevation gain: 475 m

This route takes you through the peaceful inland countryside along the Ter River, where you’ll pass by impressive ancient farmhouses scattered across the landscape. You’ll leave Girona heading west, following the river until you reach Bonmatí, where you’ll cross to the opposite bank.
From there, the route continues south with a 3.8 km climb, followed by a series of rolling roads through beautiful rural scenery. A gentle descent leads you to the ancient volcano of La Crosa—one of the region’s unique geological features. You’ll finish the ride by weaving through the open fields surrounding Girona, making your way back into the city.

Departure day

After breakfast, your trip with us comes to an end. From here, you can continue your journey or head back home. If you’d like to extend your stay and enjoy a bit more of what Girona has to offer, just let us know — we’ll be happy to help.

We hired two tour bikes to cycle from Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. We were able to leave our bikes at a hotel in Guixols which allowed us to get a cheap bus back to Girona. The team were very helpful and friendly. The bikes were very good quality and it took us just over 3 hours to ride down to the coast. We spend a few hours having lunch when we we arrived and enjoying the beach before getting a bus back to Girona.

Did the "Great Tour of Empordà Gravel 6 stages" with my spouse. This trip was amazing! We've been cycling all over the world and this trip was a favorite of mine. I loved the freedom to plan our day, ride at our pace, eat where we wanted, stop at whatever cafe worked for us, etc. The routes were easy to follow and we actually added on a bunch of milage to end up with some really big days of epic riding.The lodging was all good, breakfasts were delicious. All the hotels immediately knew where to direct us for bike storage, etc.There was one hiccup with our luggage transfer (not their fault, another group that was on a similar schedule to us had added a day to their trip in a different city, so their special luggage transfer taxi got confused and took our luggage as well as their's) and CycleTours made sure to make it right immediately and was in constant communication until we got our bags. We ended up only waiting maybe 30min on them anyway.The area is a gravel cycling DREAM in terms of the amount of gravel paths, roads, etc. Lots of dedicated bike lanes/paths and respectful drivers.For the value it was a perfect trip that I can't wait to do again.

Friendly, helpful and encouraging staff, generous with advice regarding route, and thorough in getting measurements prior to hiring, so that bike could be set up in advance. Good bike with excellent, spacious waterproof panniers. Cannot recommend highly enough.

A very good cycle hire company. Bikes - in excellent condition and work well. Staff - multilingual, helpful and pleasant. Cost - value for money. Routes to cycle - suggested and directions given.Try Carrilet 1 and 2 in the directions of Olot and Sant Pol, mostly on an old railway line.

Great cycling around Girona. We hired bikes for the day from Cycle Tours Catalonia. The shop is in a good location close to the train and bus station. The staff were really helpful and the bikes were well serviced. They suggested a great route too. Wonderful traffic free cycling. We had an excellent day out.

Together with 4 friends I rented a road bike at CycleTours for 5 days from 9-13 February. All the bikes were in excellent condition and we had great time riding them.The staff is very friendly and willing to help with any issues or needs that you might have.On our last day we wanted to go into Girona for some sightseeing and shopping. The staff at CycleTours allowed us to leave our luggage at the shop which meant that we didn’t have to drag our luggage through Girona. This was really an excellent extra service!!I highly recommend CycleTours in Girona if you to have a careless cycle experience!

We had such a wonderful trip with CycleTours from start to finish. The app for our daily routes was excellent and so easy to follow. Their recommendations for places to visit and eat were much appreciated. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We also loved the hotels. We did a 7 day trip and it was close to perfect.

We had a great ride/rental from Girona to the coast with 4 adults. The staff (although busy) provided care and attention to set us up with the right bikes and sizes. The route is relatively straight forward and lovely to ride. Although we had some information about the final shuttle pick-up location, there was some confusion as to exactly where it was (maybe it got lost in translation) but in the end we met up with the driver on time. Only issue was that we were relatively efficient with our ride and had a long delay before the actual pickup; it would have been good to have a whatsapp # for the shuttle driver. Regardless of the hiccups, the Team is professional and service oriented and the ride - highly recommended!!

The friendly staff went above and beyond — helping us with bike setup to match our measurements and suggesting some of Girona’s best rides. The bikes were top quality, and the rental rates were very reasonable. Highly recommend!

4 wonderful days in beautiful Girona.The boss indoors booked a surprise trip for me after experiencing some very difficult times recently and I must admit I was apprehensive going on my own.From walking into the store everything just amazing , I had my own guide the brilliant Juanma who just made the trip so special. 4 days of climbing on the bike he pushed me beyond my limits but wow does it make you feel alive!We completed the climbs of Rocacorba, Sant Grau, Sant Hilari,Les Serres, Els Angels and Sant Pelliaia. Apparently I was his first client in 3 years to ride all 4 days with the climbs - my reward was an extra climb!Beautiful villages such Monells and the ride along the coast was just stunning. The final stop to kiss the lions butt to ensure I return one day to Girona. You can be sure I will return.The biggest compliment I can give is that Juanma made each day feel like I was cycling with a close friend and his ability and knowledge just made each day magical.

My communication with Cycle Tours Catalonia was excellent prior to our day of cycling and I was impressed by the professionalism and timely manner that any of my queries were responded to. The day of our one day self guided gravel bike rental we were greeted warmly by staff. We were able to leave a bag with our shoes and clothes as we had walked from our hotel to the office.The young guy who assisted us was nice. He bike fitted us, but the back tire on one of our bikes was soft. Good thing my husband noticed! Not much info regarding the bike was given, (we noticed other clients getting quite a bit more info) and then a cursory overview of the Garmin unit.Being in the city, apparently the Garmin has a harder time getting its bearings. Very true! We got stuck almost out of the city for at least 45 minutes. The Garmin tells you to make a u-turn whenever it loses the signal which was constant within the city area. This particular spot had 3 different paths and we struggled to finally get on track. Super frustrating, and it turned out at the end of the day could have saved us from getting drenched from the ridiculous storm that descended upon Girona. ( we had to return the bikes before closing time so had to leave the shelter of the bridge) Also upon returning to the city, the Garmin lost signal and we ended up unnecessarily crossing a very busy highway several times which was scary.Overall we had a fun time on the 70km ride but the Garmin shortcomings were frustrating and added about an hour and a half to our day. One other important note: if you need readers to see small print you will struggle to see the directions unless you have progressive riding glasses. My poor husband had to keep his readers at the ready all the time. Perhaps that should be mentioned by CCT.

Our tour on the Costa Brava with Cycletours Catalonia was fantastic. Orioles, our guide was great, always keeping us safe, finding good places to eat, sharing things about local culture, and we never got lost!! He was kind, considerate, and fun! We recommend him highly. We went through lovelt medieval towns and gorgeous seaside resorts. Girona is now our favorite town in Spain!

My wife and I rented a couple of their new Tarmac SL8s for two days and had a wonderful experience. We picked up right from their shop, which was a quick but thorough experience. We provided our fit measurements ahead of time and the bikes were prepared - no adjustments needed! We were suggested some potential routes, and even got tips on a few that were better passed up. Day 1 took us to Banyoles and the bikes performed well. You could tell they were well cared for. Day 2 we set out on a 140km route which was nothing short of spectacular! Do not hesitate to book with Cycle Tours Catalonia when you are in Girona!

Amazing Bike Rental Experience in Girona!We were 3 guys from Latvia doing a 3-day cycling trip along the coastline in Spain (Girona), and this rental place absolutely made our experience perfect!Bikes were in excellent condition, ready for the distance and terrain.The staff was super helpful and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed.One of the guys even learned some Latvian just to surprise us – that was hilarious and made our day! :DThe whole process was smooth – from booking to return.Highly recommend this place if you're planning a biking adventure around Girona. Cycle Tours Catalonia was very well organized from the start and made our vacation seamlessly easy - all we had to do was bike, eat and sleep. The garmin came in clutch so we did not have to charge our phone mid ride. The routes via RideGPS were what cycling dreams are made of and our loop captured the best of Catalonia - from Girona to the Costa Brava to Medieval villages to France and the Pyrenees. We had plenty of flexibility to create our own stops to refuel with drinks and local cuisine. Our favorite hotel was Macelli in Castelló Empuries and our favorite meal was chèvre crepes at the base of Col d’ares. Only thing we would have done differently was to add a rest day after day 3. Those climbs were legit! Thanks for a fantastic unforgettable adventure!

Fun eMTB trip! Blue skies and hot temps every day meant getting on the road early was a must. Highlights were the beach areas and Moli del Mig ❤️❤️❤️. Too late but, we remembered: bring your own seat (ladies especially!!!) and flat pedals, and your own pump + tyre gauge + tool + puncture repair kit + chain lube (as these weren't provided). The Spec Turbo Levo 3’s were OK - tyres probably should have been replaced for us, and I’m absolutely amazed they didn’t puncture (although they had already been repaired with visible untrimmed tubeless repairs flapping around). Lesson as always if you want really good gear, then bring it yourself (a bit hard for eMTBs on planes). One day our bags were accidentally picked up by another company and transported an hour away in the opposite direction - props to Ultonia Hotel staff, who drove 2 hours to retrieve them 👍🏿. Otherwise very happy with Cycle Tours Catalonia. Ride with GPS can be a pain, especially without a course heading up view - couples, be prepared to argue! And make sure you have a phone booster battery, or you will become lost, sometimes without cell coverage. Oh yeah and watch for dogs on Loop Girona - I had a really close call with one almost latching on to my calf, and wear long sleeves for Loop Girona and also last day downhill from Els Angels - the brambles will slash your arms!

Our experience with cycleTours was wonderful. We did the Cols of Pyrenees and Costa Brava 6-stage self-guided tour and everything was perfect. The routes were very well planned taking us along quiet roads and through several beautiful villages on the Costa Brava and in the Pyrenees, which were very easy to follow. The bikes were in excellent condition and all the hotels were very nice and well located. Without a doubt, the best option in Girona!

Had a great experience with CycleTours Catalonia. We took the 6 day Food, Wine and Bike Tour and added a couple of extra days at a couple of the towns. We were given the Specialized Como e-bikes which were comfortable to ride with plenty of power if you needed it. The staff was great, the luggage was on time and generally early so that when we rode in on our bikes, the luggage was ready. The GPS app works extremely well, but make sure and take a battery pack for your phone because that particular app really burns through your phone battery really quickly. My wife had to turn her phone for half of the trip every day to have some battery left. We have done 15-16 bike trips with various bike companies throughout Europe. CycleTours Catalonia is one of the best companies to work with and the trip is one of the best trips we have taken with beautiful sights, historical sights, sea and mountain experiences, wonderful food and wine throughout the trip. In addition, the hotels ranged from very good to amazing and we experience one of the most friendliness cultures and people ever. Nice company, nice trip, nice people and competitive pricing. What more do you want?

Can’t recommend Cycle Tours Catalonia enough! Hired a fantastic Specialized bike for 2 days which was in immaculate condition at a very reasonable cost.The team were so friendly and accommodating having set the bike up with my measurements prior to me arriving. They fitted my saddle and pedals in minutes which meant a very quick handover and I was on my way.Same on the return with excellent and friendly customer service. I will definitely be using them again when next in Girona.And yes, the cycling here really does live up to the hype!

Such an amazing experience!The team were so friendly and accommodating with my partner and I in planning a self-guided tour around Girona. They were able to tailor a route to our skill levels and modified it to include some extra stops we wanted to make (Olot alone was worth the trip). The bag pickup service was seamless and all the hotels easily accommodated the sweet bikes we rented. Excellent and highly recommended bike rental place in the heart of Girona. Close to the centre so probably close to anywhere you'd stay if you were staying centrally.Bike was lovely (BMC TeamMachine SLR01). Full di2, disc brakes, 12 speed, carbon rims, etc. Lovely and fast on the flat and rolling. Great immediate braking on the long or technical descents. Not bad at climbing either and very well priced compared to other bike rentals I've done.Staff were very friendly and helpful and communication when required was quick and effective. I'd arranged to pick up the bike on the day after arriving but managed to pick it up last thing the day before after contacting them. Pick up was quick and simple. Bike fit was easy on a rig in the shop. Di2 charging cable provided and I was ready within 20 minutes. Returning was equally quick and easy. Would definitely use again if I'm in the area. Highly recommended.

We loved renting our bikes and taking a self guided tour through cycleTours Catalonia. The team was very kind and knowledgeable about the area. They took the time to walk us through all the routes. Had a great 4 day trip with a self guided tour from Catalonia Bike tours. The bike was perfect, top of the line and worked flawless.The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They preloaded GPS routes that were accurate and hit the highlights of Girona surrounding area.They arranged hotel bed and breakfast which suited us and was very convenient to the town. This is the second time I have rented a bike from Cycle Tours in Girona. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the bikes are top of the range in excellent condition. I will defiantly use them again.

I have hired a road bike from CycleTours Catalonia twice now and each time they have delivered. Efficient friendly service, great value for money and recommendations for local routes if you need them. This time I went for a BMC Team Machine SLR Two, which was super light and speedy and in great condition. The online booking engine is simple to use. See you next time!

I had a last minute change of plans so dropped by the shop the night before bike collection day. The staff were super friendly and very helpful, providing some route plans and asking if I wanted to take the bike early. Overall I had a great experience riding around Girono fantastic roads and beautiful scenery, I did get a couple flats which were due to an issue with the wheel rim but the bike overall was well maintained.Would definitely use this shop again next time I’m in town.

The service and bike hire were both amazing and flawless. I picked up the bike and was greeted by a friendly mechanic who made the adjustments to the bike fit I wanted and I was on my way to riding. Returning the bike was also pleasurable and easy. I would easily recommend Cycletours Catalonia to anyone in need of a rental or bike tour.

Fantastic bike rental company!I have hired bikes from lots of different companies in lots of different locations and have never received this level of service. Everyone I talked to was friendly and extremely helpful. They also were able to help me out even though I completely messed up my booking.The bike I rented was very well specced, in amazing condition and had no issues at all. And the price was great and included a cycle bag with items to repair any problems I may have had.I will 100% use them the next time I'm in Girona and would highly recommend them to anyone.

My husband and I did a 5 day self directed bike tour of Costa Brava. It was incredible. The gravel bikes were in great condition. I rented the ebike. It worked very well for me and Paul loved his BMC gravel. The hotel accommodations were first class and the breakfasts included were varied and delicious. We absolutely love the coffee wine and food in Costa Brava. Our tour took us on greenways, less travelled roads, coastal visas, farmers fields and walled villages. We absolutely loved everything. Manel and staff were exceptional and very responsive to our needs. Thank you for a lifetime experience we will alway remember !

They can’t do more to help! Great bike selection, and advice, including booking a taxi to our start point in Vic. Our late return, gone 6 when they close, was not a problem, even our filthy bikes were immediately washed and all for a great price.

We did the 7 day self-guided tour of Emporda on road bikes and it suited us perfectly. The bikes were new and in great shape. The route was very well chosen, little traffic, great variety and some fine passes. The hotels were of a very high standard, and the staff remarkably friendly. What more can I say!

4 days of gravel cycling on a very pretty full carbon Ridley Kanzo. Selected routes where excellent. Staff was very friendly! Highly recommended.
