Girona Greenways: Conscious Tourism

Marc Sisó, representing CicloTurisme Tours, together with Mandle, highlighted the importance of the Vies Verdes and their role in sustainable tourism.

At the time of the interview, we were on the Vies Verdes route in Torroella de Montgrí (Girona, Catalonia), offering an escape from the overcrowded areas of the Costa Brava and a low environmental impact experience.

To talk about the Vies Verdes, we must first understand what they are. In Marc’s words, the Vies Verdes are cycling routes, usually free of motorised traffic, that are used both for tourism and for commuting between towns. These paths are usually old train tracks or converted farm tracks, allowing a unique experience of being immersed in the natural environment from the very first moment on the bike.

Impact of Mass Tourism and Sustainable Alternatives

A relevant fact presented during the programme was the annual tourist flow to the Mediterranean coast: 200 million visitors at present, estimated to increase to 312 million by the year 2050. This massive concentration generates pressure on vital resources such as water and energy, which highlights the need for more sustainable alternatives such as the Vies Verdes.

Marc highlighted the commitment of cycle tourism to sustainability and environmental awareness. He also stressed the importance of loving and respecting the territory in order to transmit this care to others.

This programme offers a valuable perspective on how sustainable tourism, in harmony with the environment, is a viable and growing option for enjoying the natural wonders of Catalonia. If you want to learn more about this topic, you can watch the full episode here.
