Bike route description

A beautiful ride along the Cantabrian and Asturian coast. The rich green countryside contrasts with the blue sea and the magnificent unspoilt beaches. Picturesque villages with flower bedecked houses, fishing harbours, and the magnificent backdrop of the Picos de Europa.

The tour has three “free” days where you can cycle as much or as little as you like. Two fishing villages, a medieval town on the Santiago pilgrim trail and the beaches of Somo and Santander make for great variety.

Trip Itinerary

A beautiful ride along the Cantabrian and Asturian coast.

Arrival day: Transfer to Santillana del Mar
Pick-up at the arrival point and transfer to the charming medieval town of Santillana del Mar. Introduction to the bikes and route briefing. Spend the rest of the day walking the cobbled streets of this beautiful town, visit the modern museum of the Caves of Altamira or enjoy a walk along the rural paths and to the coast.
Stage 1: Santillana - San Vicente de la Barquera (36 km or 62 km)
Heading west, through green meadows, valleys and wonderful unspoilt coastlines and beaches. Novales is set amidst lemon groves with its typical rural architecture. Comillas has a beautiful beach, a port, a pretty square with tapas bars and restaurants, and the architectural monuments of Gaudí’s Capricho and the Palace of the Marquis of Comillas. Cycle through the Oyambre Natural Park and the beautiful beaches of Oyambre and Merón with the stunning view of San Vicente and the Picos de Europa in the distance.
Stage 2: Circular ride in San Vicente
Take some time to explore this pretty fishing village, with its many seafood restaurants and stunning surroundings. Take a day trip on one of the day trips, visit the charming mountain village of Carmona, catch a train to the fishing village of Llanes in the neighbouring province of Asturias and make the return journey to San Vicente. You can also enjoy a walk in the unspoilt mountains behind the village, or you may prefer to spend a leisurely afternoon on the beach.
Stage 3: Descent from the Miera Valley to Somo (43Km)
Transfer by vehicle to the Cantabrian Mountains, to begin the descent of the Miera Valley to our final stop, Somo from the starting point of 822 meters above sea level. From here you can take a wonderful walk through the impressive limestone valley of the Miera River that takes us to the farmlands that surround Somo and the Bahia de Santander. You will visit the mountain village of Sant Roque de Riomiera and the thermal town of Liérganes with its charming old town.
Stage 4: Circular ride in Somo
Somo has a wonderful beach with miles of golden sand. A short boat ride across the bay takes you to the lively and elegant city of Santander, capital of the province of Cantabria. Enjoy the belle époque atmosphere of El Sardinero and go shopping in the city centre. Cycle along the green country roads to visit the beautiful beaches of Loredo, Langre or Galizano and the village of All, famous for its paella. Eat freshly grilled sardines in the seaside restaurants of Pedreña, birthplace and home of the famous golfer Severiano Ballesteros.
Departure day:
End of trip. Pick up from Somo hotel and transfer to Santander o Bilbao.
