Bike route description

The Empordà is a great area to practice mountain bike. It’s large plain surrounded by mountains offers a huge variety of fantastic paths and tracks.

This route includes the best paths and tracks of the area discovering the most hidden spots avoiding the touristic areas. You will discover the unknown Empordà, avoiding the most touristic zones.

Get transported to other time, visiting ancient medieval villages, like Monells, Pals, Torroella and Castelló d’Empúries. Or the Greek and roman ruins of Emporion.

Trip Itinerary

Arrival day
In Girona there is plenty to see and to do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces in Gothic architecture and the walk along the cities ancient walls is a recommended highlight.
Stage 1: Girona – Madremanya (42 Km 537m+)
We start from the center of Girona, through the Sant Daniel valley, uphill to the sanctuary of Els Angels. Dalí married Gala in this church. From here you can enjoy a magnificent 360 grade view from al Girona county, specially the land of Empordà, where you will ride the following days.

Then after riding south on the top we will do an amazing downhill to Madremanya.
Stage 2: Madremanya - Torroella (59 Km 587m+)
We start south direction passing Cruïlles with his big medieval tour, toward les Gavarres. We will climb until Santa Coloma de Fitor, a beauty Romanesque church right on the top of the eastern part of les Gavarres.

Then we will descend to Pals one of the most important medieval villages. After we will cross a rice field area, to reach the beach in front of the spectaculars and rocky islands Les Medes, great natural refuge. Following the river Ter we reach Torroella de Montgrí.

Optional track (44km 450m+) : itinerary more soft through the plain.
Stage 3: Torroella – Figueres (63 Km 541m+)
Starting from Torroella we climb up to Montgri massif, a small range with really funny single tracks that will bring us to L’Escala. In L’Escala we will pass by the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries right in front of the sea, with great view to the sea.

Then we follow inland crossing the main agricultural part, with a lot of apple trees. We will cross the river Fluvia, to Castellò d’Empúries a big medieval village with a great Romanesque cathedral. After passing Peralada, the capital of this vineyard area, we turn inland to reach Figueres ,the home town of Dalí the great surrealist painter.
Stage 4: Figueres – Flaçà – Girona (65 km 780m+)
From Figueres we will start through woods combining with agricultural zones, crossing small villages, reaching the big river of Ter. After crossing it we turn right, west direction, following the river until we reach Flaça. And then on a plain terrain to Girona.

Optional shortcut (skip 22 km): After reaching Flaçà, we can take the train to Girona.
