Arrival day
In Girona there is plenty to see and to do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces in Gothic architecture and the walk along the cities ancient walls is a recommended highlight.
Stage 1: Loop Girona - Vall de Llémena (63 Km 850m+)
Delivery of the GPS and necessary documentation in our office. Bike fitting if bikes are rented.
The first day you will discover the inland country side of the Llémena Valley with its big ancient farms. You will continue in the direction of Sant Gregori to cross the Ter river, and go to the Vilanna Valley, the hardest climb is in that area. After that valley you surround the ancient volcano La Crosa. Finally you come back to Girona by the fields near the city.
Stage 2: Girona – St Feliu de Guixols (50 Km 360m+)
You will start the second stage cycling by the ancient train rails that nowadays is a bike path (the Greenway). When you arrive at Llambilles, you will head to the Girona plain, where you will pass through the corn fields , farmhouses and small churches like Mare de Deu del Remei, between Campllong and Sant Andreu Salou. After the fields , when you reach Llagostera you return to the Greenway and continue to Sant Feliu de Guixols.
Stage 3: Sant Feliu - Torroella de Montgrí (53km 672m+)
This stage has two distinct parts, a very flat part to start and finish, and a central part with a great assent and descent. You begin the stage passing the maritime front towards Calonge, there, passing through the fields you will go to the interior where you will start a climb of almost 10km, to the church of Santa Coloma de Fitor, then you will descend until reaching the wonderfull medieval village of Peratallada and you will head towards Pals, another medieval town. Finally, passing through a flat area of fields you will reach Torroella de Montgrí.
Stage 4: Torroella– Castelló d’Empúries (48km 400m+)
This stage is practically flat, with only a strong climb at the beginning of the day. You start the route going to the magnificent virgin beach at the end of the river Ter. Then you will continue to the port of l’Estartit and you will head for the interior where you will start the day’s climb in the direction of L’Escala, before you turn off at Punta del Milà, where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. Once in L’Escala the whole route is flat passing through the Empordà plain until Castelló d’Empúries.
Stage 5: Castelló - Figueres (65km 1000m+)
This is the hardest stage, but it is all worthwile thanks to the best views. You come to Castelló in the direction of Empuriabrava, a village with navigable canals. Then you go to Roses, where you go to the beach of Alamadrava, across the seafront. There you begin the great uphill of the day, first passing by the tower of the Sastre and finally arriving at the summit of Puig Alt. Once there, you cross a long descent that will lead you to a plain of vineyards and olive groves passing through the villages of Pau and Vilajuiga and later on by the medieval village of Peralada. Finally, crossing the fields, you arrive at Figueres.
Stage 6: Figueres -Girona (59km 1000m+)
Last stage of the tour. This stage is divided into two very different areas. The first one is very flat through the fields and the second part very mountainous by the Gavarres. You leave Figueres passing through fields and small villages such as Vilamalla, Siurana or Camallera. You continue crossing fields until arriving at Bordils and from there you go to Sant Martí Vell where you begin a climb towards the interior of the Gavarres and ascend to the sanctuary of the Angels. Once above you iniciate the descent towards the valley of Sant Daniel that will bring you back to Girona directly to the heart of the downtown, where you can have dinner at one of the good restaurants and enjoy the completion of the tour.
