N3-Description

Bike route description

This week's itinerary lets you discover the Empordà, one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world.

Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the soil, the footsteps of the mountains surrounding the plains are a perfect terrain to produce grapes. The ancient farmers in the area decided to use the plains for planting olive trees and the slopes for planting vines on terraces separated by dry-stone walls.

Since 2005 influential wine guru Robert Parker put Empordà on the world wine-producing map. Thanks to the hard work of the wineries, this area has been certified as an Origin Designation of Empordà.

It’s an easy tour for regular cyclists, that combines half of the tour on quiet secondary roads, and half on nice and clean non paved roads. Stages are average 40 km long without big climbs.

This tour proposes a guided visit to the cellars with wine and local products tasting.

N3-Must-do

Trip Itinerary

Arrival day
Arrival in Girona. There is plenty to see and to do in this magical historical city. Spend the day visiting the Cathedral, which has the widest single nave of Gothic architecture in the world and getting lost through the narrow streets of the ancient Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved in the world. We also recommend a stroll along the Rambla or the medieval walls, which gives you a fantastic panoramic view of the city.
Stage 1: Girona - St Feliu de Guíxols (45Km 280m+)
Starting from our office you will follow a cycle path to exit the city towards the south. The ride takes you straight to the Mediterranean Sea. This section follows the greenway called “El Carrilet”, passing through the towns of Quart, Cassà de la Selva, Llagostera and Santa Cristina d’Aro. Along the route we always have the Gavarres Massif as a backdrop, a mountainous forest area, consisting mainly of oaks, important for the cork production. We arrive in San Feliu de Guíxols, our hotel will be near the nice beach of Sant Pol.
Stage 2: St Feliu de Guíxols - Calella de Palafrugell (30Km 271m+)
Today you’ll ride North along the coast combining the coastal road with the front sea boulevards, visiting the main port town of Palamós. After a few kilometers you’ll pass the unspoilt cove of Platja de Castell, with its Iberian settlement on the left side. This is a nice place to have a picnic and take a swim in the Mediterranean sea. Later on you arrive in the picturesque old fishing village of Calella de Palafurgell, one of the pearls of the Costa Brava. On the last section you’ll be cycling along the greenway called “Ruta del Tren Petit”.
Stage 3: Calella de Palafrugell - Torroella de Montgrí (29Km 180m+)
The route starts towards the north, inland passing through Palafrugell, with its fish, meat and vegetable market. This is a nice place to learn about the local product of this region. You can also visit the Cork Museum. After exiting Palafurgell you reach Pals, one of the better conserved medieval centres. The ride will take you through natural wetlands with extensive rice fields and long sandy beaches. The bike tour ends in Torroella de Montgrí at the foot of the Montgrí massif with its impressive castle.
Stage 4:  Torroella de Montgrí - Castelló d’Empúries (36Km 60m+)
The route continues to the North passing the Montgrí massif into the county of Alt Empordà. We enter the long Bay of Roses with long, sandy beaches. Next to the pretty medieval settlement Sant Martí d’Empúries and right in front of the superb beach, we should take the time to visit the archeological settlement of Empúries with its Greek and Roman ruins, the gateway of the classic cultures to the Iberian Peninsular. The route then continues North where you will pass through the protected marshlands of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà. The route ends at the village of Castelló d’Empúries, which has a rich architectural heritage; gothic church , Count’s palace, old market building and Jewish quarter.
Stage 5: Loop Castelló d’Empúries (37Km 181m+)
This ride provides fantastic views of the Pyrenees as a backdrop while cycling through the 100 year old vineyards. Today you will have the opportunity to visit the most interesting wineries, that are mainly located in the towns of Vilajuïga and Pau. This day you can enjoy a wine and local product tasting at the Espelt Cellar.
Stage 6: Castelló d’Empúries - Figueres (43Km 435m+)
The last stage heads first to Peralada, the capital of the wine DO. Here you can visit the castle and the medieval town. From there you will cycle crossing the upper part of the vineyards zone passing by Garriguella, Vilamaniscle and Rabos wit the most ancient groves. The tour proposes a visit to the spectacular cellar of La Vinyeta, where you can enjoy a picnic and a wine tasting with locally brewed products. From there the tour takes you to a long downhill ride until arriving at your final destination, the city of Figueres. After arriving to Figueres, riders can enjoy a visit to the world famous Theatre-Museum Dalí, still one of the most visited touristic sites in Spain.
Departure day
Departure from Figueres after breakfast.

Excellent and highly recommended bike rental place in the heart of Girona. Close to the centre so probably close to anywhere you'd stay if you were staying centrally.Bike was lovely (BMC TeamMachine SLR01). Full di2, disc brakes, 12 speed, carbon rims, etc. Lovely and fast on the flat and rolling. Great immediate braking on the long or technical descents. Not bad at climbing either and very well priced compared to other bike rentals I've done.Staff were very friendly and helpful and communication when required was quick and effective. I'd arranged to pick up the bike on the day after arriving but managed to pick it up last thing the day before after contacting them. Pick up was quick and simple. Bike fit was easy on a rig in the shop. Di2 charging cable provided and I was ready within 20 minutes. Returning was equally quick and easy. Would definitely use again if I'm in the area. Highly recommended.

We loved renting our bikes and taking a self guided tour through cycleTours Catalonia. The team was very kind and knowledgeable about the area. They took the time to walk us through all the routes. They were also super responsive when we called them for help. Additionally, the gravel bikes we rented were great, we were apprehensive to rent because we love our own bikes but we ended up being very happy with them. Would highly recommend!

I have hired a road bike from CycleTours Catalonia twice now and each time they have delivered. Efficient friendly service, great value for money and recommendations for local routes if you need them. This time I went for a BMC Team Machine SLR Two, which was super light and speedy and in great condition. The online booking engine is simple to use. See you next time!

I had a last minute change of plans so dropped by the shop the night before bike collection day. The staff were super friendly and very helpful, providing some route plans and asking if I wanted to take the bike early. Overall I had a great experience riding around Girono fantastic roads and beautiful scenery, I did get a couple flats which were due to an issue with the wheel rim but the bike overall was well maintained.Would definitely use this shop again next time I’m in town.

The service and bike hire were both amazing and flawless. I picked up the bike and was greeted by a friendly mechanic who made the adjustments to the bike fit I wanted and I was on my way to riding. Returning the bike was also pleasurable and easy. I would easily recommend Cycletours Catalonia to anyone in need of a rental or bike tour.

Fantastic bike rental company!I have hired bikes from lots of different companies in lots of different locations and have never received this level of service. Everyone I talked to was friendly and extremely helpful. They also were able to help me out even though I completely messed up my booking. The bike I rented was very well specced, in amazing condition and had no issues at all. And the price was great and included a cycle bag with items to repair any problems I may have had.I will 100% use them the next time I'm in Girona and would highly recommend them to anyone.

My husband and I did a 5 day self directed bike tour of Costa Brava. It was incredible. The gravel bikes were in great condition. I rented the ebike. It worked very well for me and Paul loved his BMC gravel. The hotel accommodations were first class and the breakfasts included were varied and delicious. We absolutely love the coffee wine and food in Costa Brava. Our tour took us on greenways, less travelled roads, coastal visas, farmers fields and walled villages. We absolutely loved everything. Manel and staff were exceptional and very responsive to our needs. Thank you for a lifetime experience we will alway remember !

They can’t do more to help! Great bike selection, and advice, including booking a taxi to our start point in Vic. Our late return, gone 6 when they close, was not a problem, even our filthy bikes were immediately washed and all for a great price.

We did the 7 day self-guided tour of Emporda on road bikes and it suited us perfectly. The bikes were new and in great shape. The route was very well chosen, little traffic, great variety and some fine passes. The hotels were of a very high standard, and the staff remarkably friendly. What more can I say!
